Somebody Important

Appearing as Somebody Important, being Kathryn Booster, being Me. Interventions.

The performance is about recognition and misrecognition, a moment of confusion. The piece is about exploiting the archetype; it is about manipulating behavior by appearance.

The performance is playing with appearance and perception. I am using an archetype appearance of an "important person" to draw attention, but instead of seeing somebody important the audience will see me.

The second part of the project Somebody Important is a video work "Room 657", which is a series of actions performed in hotel room during my stay on April 27th, 2010.

The interventions take place in Pori Art Museum, downtown Pori and in the Generator Gallery 27.4. -7.5. Video work Room 657 is exhibited in Generator Gallery 3.5. -15.5.

Traces of Spaces

I am working with tracing the traces in the rooms and on the territory of the old Pori cotton factory. Based on/inspired of these traces, I am creating an installation in one of the rooms in the Generator Gallery. This work is combined with historical research based on written sources and meeting people who have done research about the factory. I have started my installation by setting up a warp of cotton threads for weaving. Cotton thread is a symbolic trace of the old cotton factory, and the warp made of thousands of such threads, will in turn form a part of the traces I will be leaving behind. During the following days I will be completing the installation, and I will also be performing outside the Generator Gallery, on the territory of the old cotton factory.

A series of workshops, performances and film shoot!

The film, Invisible Forces is about the relationship between a character's internal psychological and external physical world. As the story goes, Rody Plane is a young woman who has been pushed around by her caustic environment. She deals with this by retreating into a dissociative inner world, letting the invisible forces take control.

The scene taking place in Pori is one in which participants can make actions and movements of their choice in a group performance.

A Song from Home by Christina Georgiou

During the first week in Pori I was collecting songs by asking from people, especially foreigners living in Pori, to teach me traditional songs from their native country. During the second week I was intensively singing these songs in the gallery space. Both phases of the project were dealing with my intention to examine how native songs can affect the feeling of belonging in one's perception through memory. How this remembering, which is also connected with stories and past incidences in one's life, can challenge one's perception regarding the territory he/she is part of now and how many are the possibilities that these people can feel dislocated during remembering their roots?

During the third and last week of this exhibition, traces from this intervention remained in the space through sound installation and text.

The collected songs were native songs from Finland, India, Germany, Russia, Dominican Republic, Cyprus, Armenia and Australia.

"I'm pleased to meet you in the mountain" by Ilka Theurich

I'm pleased to meet you in the mountain is a two weeks durational performance series for the city of Pori which consists of ten different 12 hours durational solo performances and the daily documentation will grow and been shown in the Generator Gallery.

The focus of interest in this performance series is the moment of encounter between the performance artist and the audiencce - this moment is a moment of direct communication in the present moment of lived experience, while it is taking place – not how it is later described in a different manner. “So much can happen in one moment that only lasts a few seconds. A micro-analysis, so to speak, that at the same time directs attention to a dimension of reality that proceeds on the assumption that the world changes while one is observing it. “ (Theurich, April 2009)

Live Art Generator Project

Live Art Generator is a collaborative project and exhibition event taking place at the Generaattorigalleria in Pori, Finland. This project is a collaboration between the Master's degree Programme in Visual Culture, The Department of Art and Media Pori at the Aalto University School of Art and Design and the Degree Programme in Live Art and Performance Studies (MA), Theatre Academy Helsinki.
